Yoga Retreat in Tiruvannamalai:
A Sacred Temple Town in South India
January 30- February 5, 2027
Set at the foot of the sacred mountain Arunachala, this immersive yoga retreat in Tiruvannamalai offers a rare opportunity to step out of the demands of daily life and into an environment that naturally supports inner stillness, clarity, and renewal. Revered for centuries as a powerful center of spiritual practice, Tiruvannamalai invites a slowing down of the nervous system and a deepening of awareness simply through presence in the land itself. Within this supportive atmosphere, participants are guided through a balanced rhythm of yoga asana, meditation, contemplative inquiry, sound, and rest—practices that gently dissolve habitual tension, quiet mental overactivity, and reconnect us to an underlying sense of steadiness and ease.
The retreat emphasizes inner listening, embodied awareness, and simplicity rather than striving or accumulation. On the mat, this approach fosters greater sensitivity, ease, and authenticity in movement and breath; off the mat, it supports emotional resilience, clearer perception, and a felt sense of contentment that is not dependent on external circumstances. The sacred rhythms of the town—temple bells, daily ritual, pilgrimage, and devotion—become an extension of the practice, creating an environment in which meditation and introspection unfold organically throughout the day. Many practitioners find that being held within this living spiritual landscape allows deeper layers of healing, insight, and integration to arise naturally.
Tiruvannamalai is home to ancient temples, vibrant ashrams, and the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, whose presence continues to infuse the mountain and town with a profound atmosphere of silence and clarity. Practice here is inseparable from place: walking meditation around Arunachala, moments of quiet reflection, and immersion in devotional sound and ritual offer a lived experience of yoga as a way of being, not merely something we do. This setting supports a gentle but profound shift—from effort toward presence, from seeking toward resting in awareness.
Participants are supported in exploring yoga as an integrated, embodied path. Through asana, meditation, philosophical inquiry, the retreat offers a holistic journey toward clarity, healing, and embodied wisdom, uniquely amplified by the sanctity and living presence of Tiruvannamalai.
Daily Rhythm & Retreat Experience
Each day we gather for daily sessions of meditation, pranayama, and asana, aligning the body with the quiet intelligence of the land. Saraswati Clere guides skillful, heart-centered yoga practices that integrate precise alignment, subtle energetics, and devotional awareness—supporting strength, openness, and embodied presence. These sessions are designed to meet practitioners where they are, while gently inviting greater clarity, resilience, and ease.
Sacred Excursions & Pilgrimage
Beyond the retreat space, we journey together on guided excursions to nearby temples, ashrams, and holy sites, including time at Ramana Maharshi’s Ashram and opportunities to walk portions of the Girivalam, the revered circumambulation path around Arunachala. These pilgrimages deepen the retreat experience, allowing participants to directly encounter the subtle power, silence, and grace for which this region is renowned.
Nourishment, Rest & Daily Pleasures
Retreat life is supported by delicious, freshly prepared vegetarian meals, inspired by South Indian cuisine and crafted to nourish body and spirit. Between sessions, there is ample time to rest, journal, meditate, or simply enjoy the beauty of nature. Local markets offer vibrant colors, textiles, incense, and handmade items, inviting gentle exploration and connection with daily life in Tiruvannamalai. The atmosphere is relaxed, unhurried, and deeply supportive of inner work.

Travel Planning
The nearest international gateway is Chennai International Airport (MAA), approximately four hours by car from Tiruvannamalai. Private car transfers are readily available and provide a comfortable journey through the beautiful South Indian countryside.
Another wonderful option is to travel via Pondicherry (Puducherry), a charming former French colonial seaside town located approximately three hours from Tiruvannamalai. Many participants enjoy spending a few days in Pondicherry before the retreat to rest after international travel and experience its unique blend of French architecture, vibrant cafés, oceanfront promenades, and rich spiritual heritage.
Round-trip airfare from San Francisco to Chennai generally ranges from $850–$1,100 USD, depending on the season and booking date. Airfare and transportation to the retreat center are not included in the retreat fee.
Extend Your Journey
Many participants choose to arrive several days early to recover from jet lag and immerse themselves more fully in the beauty and spirituality of South India.
If you spend time in Pondicherry, you may wish to visit Auroville, the international community dedicated to human unity, or the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, one of India's most influential contemporary spiritual centers. The peaceful coastal setting provides an ideal opportunity to slow down, acclimate, and prepare for the deeper contemplative experience of the retreat.
For many travelers, the journey itself becomes part of the pilgrimage—an opportunity to gradually transition from the pace of everyday life into the stillness, presence, and sacred atmosphere of Tiruvannamalai.
Our Travel Recommendations
We encourage participants to arrive in India two to three days before the retreat to allow time to rest, adjust to the time difference, and begin settling into the experience. Whether you choose to arrive through Chennai or spend a few days in Pondicherry, this extra time can make your retreat more comfortable and enjoyable.
As the retreat approaches, we will coordinate participants' arrival schedules and help organize shared transportation to the retreat center whenever possible. We are also happy to offer guidance if you would like to extend your travels in India before or after the retreat.
Once the retreat begins, we will remain together as a community, creating a supportive environment for practice, study, and immersion in the sacred atmosphere of Tiruvannamalai.
